You’ll notice from reading a lot of reviews from the latter end of 2023 and into 2024 and recurring theme around culture, redundancies, working from home changes etc. The end of 2023 saw a big change for Betway due to combination of a couple of factors. Firstly, Betway (from a decision taken by Super Group the umbrella company) exited its largest revenue market at fairly short notice. This lead to two rounds of fairly significant redundancies with the first taking place in October 2023 and when results from other markets hadn’t made up for the shortfall of the loss of the exited market another round took place in or around Easter of 2024. Whether those processes were done correctly in terms of the people who left the business and those that stayed us up for conjecture and that will be the same I imagine across all businesses that have to go through that process. Almost at exactly the same time as the major market highlighted closed, there was a large change in the HR department with the former HR director/head of HR being replaced. Looking back, this change in approach can be attributed to a lot of the ill feeling you’ll be reading in other posts as there has been a marked change and shift in culture from that point onwards. Some of that cultural change and mindset change was needed and was being called for by others in the business but as it has played out over time it has gone to far and a lot of long standing, loyal and good employees have left of their own accord because of the working conditions or have been lucky enough to have been ‘selected’ for packages to leave the business as they were for some reason deemed expendable or a problem. Whilst you’ll find the new offices very appealing (and they are) you’ll soon find a culture and vibe in the business which feels ‘off’ and that is stemming from the top down through Super Group, into Betway and other areas. It’s run by fear and not to challenge the status quo and collaboration is slowly being squeezed out of the business. Its worth pointing out that during the reviews your asked to give a CEO approval for Betway. In this case this isn’t accurate as the CEO has also been marginalised to a large degree (not part of giving business updates for example and left to others) and his role diminished in favour of said HR representatives from Super Group. The culture change here is not down to the Betway CEO and that is worth highlighting to people before they join and get a false sense of this. If you’re applying for a senior role (head of department, manager or director) please be aware that accountability from what is deemed the ‘EXCO’ at Betway can be lacking (especially from newer members on that level) which can leave you exposed and see no direction or guidance come to you. Whilst you would think being a member of EXCO would mean you would see leadership that can be lacking and that slack left being picked up by longer standing Heads of Department (level below EXCO) who deserve promotion but are stuck at a glass ceiling with no room to progress due to the cultural shift mentioned through this post.
Pros
Barista Complimentary fruits and drinks on Thursdays New building
Cons
I have never seen that much toxicity in any working environment so far. HR that allows bullying in the teams by taking no action, they also force people to come and work from the office - not hybrid anymore, no flexibility and no empathy in any circumstances. Many people are hired due to acquaintances Internal threats that people will be fired or that they will fail them in the probations Even employees who have been in the business for many years hate the environment anymore and admit that it’s becoming unbearable When I was hired they told me that they’re going through changes for the best and to ignore any negative reviews as people are commenting in the old state of the business. What I’d been told was definitely misleading as the situation is getting worse and worse instead of better. I wouldn’t recommend this environment to anyone who wants to maintain their mental health.
