Panel Beater

Cape Town

The Panel beater is responsible for assessing, repairing, and restoring damaged vehicles to ensure structural integrity, safety, and aesthetic quality. This includes inspecting vehicles to determine the extent of damage, fabricating or sourcing replacement parts, performing welding and reshaping tasks, and applying protective coatings.

Damage Assessment & Parts Coordination

  • Review job cards and quotations to determine required repair work.
  • Inspect damaged trucks to assess structural, body, mechanical, and interior damage.
  • Assist estimators with repair time and cost calculations, providing accurate quotations.
  • Identify and order necessary parts, ensuring they are correct and undamaged.
  • Fabricate replacement parts when originals are unavailable or uneconomical.
  • Ensure all parts requiring paint are sent with the vehicle to the paint shop.

Repair & Assembly Quality

  • Disassemble damaged sections to access affected areas.
  • Reassemble components, ensuring correct fitment and functionality.
  • Straighten and reshape panels and frames using appropriate tools.
  • Cut and weld replacement panels or frames as required.
  • Repair or replace damaged truck parts such as fenders, doors, and bumpers.
  • Perform welding tasks using MIG, TIG, or oxy-acetylene techniques.
  • Sand, grind, and smooth repaired areas for a seamless finish.
  • Apply primers, paints, and protective coatings to repaired sections.
  • Conduct inspections and roadworthiness checks to ensure compliance with standards.

Team Coordination & Professional Conduct

  • Perform quality checks on assistant’s work and provide guidance.
  • Support and mentor assistants in technical tasks.
  • Liaise with foremen, estimators, and other stakeholders to maintain workflow efficiency.
  • Maintain and calibrate tools and equipment regularly.
  • Uphold productivity, efficiency, and professional conduct standards.
  • Assist in operational functions as required.

Skills Required:

  • Strong communication skills to liaise effectively with estimators, foremen, and team members.
  • Proven troubleshooting skills to identify hidden or additional damage during inspections.
  • Solid technical repair skills to reshape panels, weld components, and restore vehicle integrity.Attention to detail to ensure correct alignment, seamless finishes, and compliance with safety standards.
  • Ability to mentor assistants to guide, check, and improve their work quality.
  • Organisational skills to coordinate parts ordering, workflow, and tool calibration.
  • Intermediate proficiency in welding techniques, including MIG, TIG, and oxy-acetylene, applied to the repair and joining of metal components.
  • Strong ability to operate hydraulic presses and panel reshaping tools, ensuring accurate restoration of truck frames and body panels.
  • Competence in the use of sanding, grinding, and smoothing equipment, producing seamless finishes on repaired surfaces.
  • Proficiency in fabrication tools and processes, enabling the creation of replacement parts when originals are unavailable or uneconomical.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Qualified Panelbeater (Red Seal Certification)
  • 5+ years’ experience post qualification in panel beating within a workshop environment.
  • Intermediate proficiency in welding techniques, including MIG, TIG, and oxy-acetylene, applied to the repair and joining of metal components.
  • Strong ability to operate hydraulic presses and panel reshaping tools, ensuring accurate restoration of truck frames and body panels.
  • Competence in the use of sanding, grinding, and smoothing equipment, producing seamless finishes on repaired surfaces.
  • Proficiency in fabrication tools and processes, enabling the creation of replacement parts when originals are unavailable or uneconomical.

License/Certification:

  • Red Seal Qualification (Required)
