What is an Operations Support Specialist?

Operations support specialists perform a range of administrative support tasks. They process invoices; approve purchase orders and negotiate with vendors; coordinate deliveries of supplies; and manage calendars. They may also be responsible for financial transactions, such as handling petty cash or overseeing a cash drawer. They also typically handle a variety of general office tasks such as data processing and organizing electronic files. They often coordinate maintenance repairs and manage other aspects of the physical property or equipment.

Operations support specialists typically have at least a high school diploma, although a college degree or additional training is an advantage. They commonly have a background as an administrative assistant or customer service representative. These roles require proficiency with common office software programs such as Outlook and Excel.
