What is a Computer Operator?

Computer Operators are responsible for running computer operations as well as ensuring that computer systems and hardware are in good working order. Their tasks include maintaining work order schedules, inputting commands into computer terminals, performing routine maintenance and installing software updates along with a myriad of other tasks. Computer Operators work in many different industries and organizations, including healthcare, government agencies and more. They typically work from a server room or data center.

No formal education is required of Computer Operators, but many individuals in this role possess associate's degrees or certificates in fields like Information Systems. The most important qualities for Computer Operators are a strong understanding of computer systems, the ability to follow directions, and excellent analytical thinking and problem solving skills.

Responsibilities for Computer Operator

  • Input commands from computer terminal and oversee that operations are carried out without error
  • Maintain a calendar detailing work order to ensure that all tasks can be completed on time
  • Ensure that printers, cartridges and other equipment are fully stocked and ready for use
  • Perform light maintenance on equipment and systems in order to prevent problems or errors
  • Ensure software updates are installed and bugs are fixed as needed
  • Troubleshoot software and hardware problems that are reported and resolve them
  • Report any problems or malfunctions to the necessary computer technician
  • Check that local area networks are functioning properly, and resolve or repair issues when they are identified

Qualifications for Computer Operator

  • Associate's degree in Information Systems is strongly preferred
  • 1+ years of experience working with computer systems
  • Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of computer functions and strong computer operation skills
  • Capable of working efficiently with minimal supervision
  • Possess strong communication skills and be able to follow directions
  • Exemplify analytical and problem solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot computer problems that may arise
  • Superior time management skills are essential in order to ensure work orders are completed on time
  • Must be willing to work irregular hours and occasional weekends
  • Should have a positive attitude and work well with others
