Beware that the pay rate is very low per minute per minute dictation. Not all the dictation comes through very clearly. By the time you have looked up the name of a hospital that might be dictated as 'Lizzie and John's' by the doctor and found the address for St John and St Elizabeth Hospital and by the time you have double checked everything for a collective total of 15 minutes dictation sent through, you will have only earned about £7 and you might have been at it with all the re-listening or checks you have to make for an hour, or more if you are new to the dictation system used. That is a lot less than even the minimum wage. You have to buy your own foot pedal. Do not try and do it with the control keys they recommend, it takes much longer. I was about to buy a foot pedal as I have worked as an NHS Medical Secretary for over 30 years, I am good at it and I am used to it, but it is just not worth it. There is a sense of pressure exerted further by the messaging system. I had to report when I went for a cup of tea and when I returned and met with negative feedback for taking too long to reply to a Skype message. I was promised two days of training before I began paid work but that never happened and I was launched straight into dictation with just a crib sheet to follow for their usual guidance and when I asked whether od or bd (once a day or twice a day) was really meant for letters going to patients, rather than doctors - I was told to do what I felt was best and not to worry about the official guidance sheet! Before taking this on, think long and hard about how much or how little you would really be earning against a PAYE job that meets at least the minimum wage. Think about what it costs to run your computer, buy the foot pedal, in winter keep the place warm where you work and think about your work life balance.
