Kettering University was founded in 1919 as the School of Automotive Trades. It later became the General Motors Institute. In 1998 the school was renamed in honor of Charles F. "The Boss" Kettering, founder of Delco Electronics, which was acquired by General Motors in 1936 and absorbed by auto parts manufacturer (and GM spin-off) Delphi in 1997.
