Senior Software Engineer — Backend

Overview A Senior Backend Engineer who designs, builds, and maintains scalable, reliable server-side systems and APIs. Owns technical decisions, mentors engineers, and helps shape architecture and best practices across services.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement, test, and operate backend services and APIs with production-grade reliability, performance, and security.
• Drive architecture for microservices, event-driven systems, data pipelines, or monolith-to-microservice migrations as needed.
• Lead full lifecycle development: requirements, design, implementation, code reviews, deployment, monitoring, and incident response.
• Write clean, maintainable code and automated tests; enforce code quality through reviews and tooling.
• Collaborate with product, frontend, QA, SRE, and data teams to deliver features and improvements.
• Mentor and grow engineers: provide technical guidance, perform reviews, and help with career development.
• Identify and reduce technical debt; propose and execute refactors and performance optimizations.
• Define and maintain CI/CD, observability (metrics, logs, tracing), and security best practices.
• Participate in on-call rotations and incident postmortems; drive root-cause fixes.
• Contribute to hiring: interview, evaluate candidates, and help refine hiring bar.

Required qualifications

• 5+ years professional backend engineering experience (or equivalent).
• Strong proficiency in at least one server-side language (e.g., Java, Kotlin, Go, Python, Ruby, C#, Node.js/TypeScript).
• Deep understanding of web APIs (REST, gRPC), authentication/authorization patterns (OAuth, JWT), and API design.
• Experience with relational (Postgres, MySQL) and NoSQL (Redis, MongoDB, DynamoDB) databases, including schema design and query optimization.
• Solid knowledge of distributed systems concepts: load balancing, consistency, caching, message queues (Kafka, RabbitMQ), and rate limiting.
• Production experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) and container orchestration (Kubernetes, ECS) and IaC (Terraform, CloudFormation).
• Familiar with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and observability tooling (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, Datadog, OpenTelemetry).
• Strong debugging, performance-tuning, and incident-response skills.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills; experience mentoring others.

Preferred qualifications

• Experience designing event-driven architectures and stream processing (Kafka, Kinesis, Flink).
• Background in high-throughput, low-latency systems or large-scale data platforms.
• Familiarity with security practices (encryption at rest/in transit, secrets management).
• Experience with backend performance profiling and cost optimization.
• Open-source contributions or prior experience defining platform-wide standards.

Pay: $9,454.23 – $11,794.34 per month
