ASB is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the HOST Squad within the Core Tribe.
The HOST Squad is responsible for supporting and enhancing ASB’s core banking platforms. This includes maintaining critical backend systems that support daily banking operations, ensuring system stability, reliability, and safe delivery of change within a regulated environment.
This role focuses on working with legacy mainframe systems, supporting end‑to‑end delivery from requirements analysis through to implementation and production support. The work involves a mix of system enhancement, issue resolution, testing support, and collaboration with business and platform teams.
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Supporting the development, enhancement, and maintenance of backend systems on mainframe platforms using COBOL, JCL, and related technologies
- Analysing business requirements and translating them into technical solutions for system change and improvement
- Delivering updates and fixes to legacy systems, ensuring stability and minimal operational risk
- Supporting batch and online processing, including job scheduling and execution using tools such as Control‑M
- Investigating and resolving production issues, working closely with support and platform teams
- Contributing to testing activities including unit testing, system integration testing (SIT), and user acceptance testing (UAT)
- Preparing and maintaining technical documentation including design artefacts, test cases, and change records
- Participating in change and release management processes, including engagement with governance forums
- Working within an agile delivery environment, contributing to sprint ceremonies and backlog refinement
- Collaborating with engineers, analysts, and business stakeholders to support successful delivery of platform changes
Applicants must meet all of the following minimum requirements:
- Proven commercial experience developing or supporting backend systems using COBOL, JCL, and related mainframe technologies
- Experience working with mainframe data stores such as DB2 and VSAM
- Strong experience in system analysis, including gathering and translating business requirements into technical solutions
- Proven experience delivering changes within legacy system environments in large or complex organisations
- Experience supporting production systems, including investigation and resolution of incidents and defects
- Experience working across testing phases such as SIT and UAT
- Experience with batch processing and job scheduling tools such as Control‑M or equivalent
- Experience working within regulated environments such as banking or financial services
- Experience working in agile delivery environments using tools such as JIRA and Confluence
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to work with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders
- Relevant tertiary qualification in Information Technology or equivalent experience
