Chemical Engineering Graduate | Air Quality | 2026 Start
New Zealand
Mō tō mātou āhuatanga | Who we are
Tonkin + Taylor is one of New Zealand’s leading engineering and environmental consultancies, known for solving challenging problems through technical excellence, collaboration and practical thinking. We are proudly New Zealand-owned and employee-owned, with a shared purpose to create and sustain a better world.
Our Air Quality team is one of the largest specialist teams of its kind in New Zealand. We work on diverse and interesting projects involving air quality, odour, dust, industrial emissions, monitoring and environmental assessment - helping clients make good decisions and manage their effects on communities and the environment.
Joining T+T as a graduate means learning from experienced engineers and scientists, contributing to meaningful project work, and building your career in a team that will back you from day one.
The opportunity:
We’re looking for a Graduate Chemical Engineer (Chemical & Process or Chemical & Materials Engineering) to join our Air Quality team within our Environmental Engineering Discipline.
Air quality consulting is about understanding how emissions from industry, infrastructure and development can affect people and the environment - and helping clients manage those effects responsibly. Our work sits at the intersection of engineering, environmental science, data analysis, regulatory planning and practical problem-solving.
As a graduate in our team, you’ll build strong technical foundations across areas such as air dispersion modelling, odour and dust assessments, ambient air quality monitoring, emissions estimation, data analysis and technical reporting.
You don’t need prior professional experience. We’re looking for someone who is curious, analytical, keen to learn, and interested in understanding how industrial and environmental systems work in practice. If you enjoy variety, like solving practical problems, and want to contribute to better outcomes for clients, communities and the environment, we’d love to hear from you!
Kei te hiahia mātou ki ōu | What you'll be doing
The work will vary depending on the projects you’re involved in, but as a graduate in the Air Quality team you can expect to be involved in things like:
Learning how industrial processes generate air emissions, including contaminants such as dust, odour, combustion gases and volatile compounds.
Helping estimate emissions from a range of sources, such as manufacturing sites, wastewater treatment plants, quarries, landfills, energy facilities and infrastructure projects.
Supporting air dispersion modelling to understand how emissions move through the atmosphere and what that means for nearby communities and environments.
Analysing monitoring data, meteorological data and process information to identify trends, check compliance requirements and support technical assessments.
Assisting with odour, dust and air quality assessments for resource consent applications and operational management plans.
Visiting sites to better understand industrial processes, emission sources, monitoring equipment and how projects operate in practice.
Preparing clear, well-structured technical reports, memos and presentations that communicate findings to clients, regulators and project teams.
Working alongside engineers, scientists, planners and other specialists across different sectors and project types.
Building your technical judgement through project work, mentoring, feedback and exposure to both office-based analysis and site-based work.
Na tōu rourou | What you'll bring
To be a good fit for this role, you’ll be a recent graduate or currently in your final year of study and ideally have:
A BE in Chemical & Process Engineering, Chemical & Materials Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
Curiosity about how real-world processes, systems and equipment work, and a genuine interest in air quality and environmental management.
Strong analytical skills and confidence working with data, calculations and technical information.
Good attention to detail and a willingness to ask questions and learn.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
A collaborative approach and an interest in working with people from different technical backgrounds.
A willingness to spend time on site, engage with clients and develop practical consulting skills.
Kei te whakapono mātou ki tō whanaketanga | We'll back you from day one
Starting your career is a big step, and we want you to feel supported as you grow. As part of our team, you can expect:
Mentoring and guidance from experienced air quality practitioners.
Support to build your confidence in technical analysis, modelling, site work, client communication and report writing.
Exposure to T+T’s national network of specialists across engineering, environmental science, planning and related disciplines.
A variety of projects across different sectors, clients and technical challenges.
Opportunities to learn how environmental consulting works - from early project scoping through to technical assessment, reporting and client delivery.
Internal and external training and development opportunities.
Professional membership fees paid.
A structured development pathway to help you build your career over time.
Ngā Hua | Our benefits
$750 annual wellbeing allowance and wellbeing programme.
Flexible working options, including formal flexible arrangements, part-time roles and the ability to purchase extra leave.
Professional memberships and continued education support.
Internal training and mentoring opportunities.
Additional parental leave, salary top-up and back-to-work coaching programme.
A very active social club, free fruit and frequent morning teas.
Modern office environments.
A supportive team environment with room to shape your career over time.
