The Opportunity

Shine has a reputation as a leader in plaintiff civil litigation in New Zealand. Our dedicated team delivers justice for our clients who have suffered losses, whether an insurance dispute, building defect dispute, earthquake claim, abuse law, class action / representative action, or general civil litigation. We have seen an organic increase in actions brought by plaintiffs and, consequently require a “go-getter” to join our vibrant team.

Permanently based in Auckland CBD, this is an excellent opportunity for a seasoned litigator with experience contributing to the success of complex, major litigation disputes and/or class actions to join us as a Special Counsel in our Class Actions team.

Whether you’ve come from defendant or plaintiff practice, you will have the opportunity to take a leading role on prominent cases, including contributing to case strategy, expert evidence and investigations into new class actions. We are proud to hold a portfolio of prospective class actions including, but not limited to, product liability, natural disaster, environmental, general insurance, and social justice-based class actions.

Reporting to the Director of Shine Lawyers New Zealand, you will have an ideal balance of autonomy and guidance. You will be backed by a team of experienced class actions lawyers both based in Auckland and within our Australian team. With compassion, connection and purpose, you’ll truly champion our clients by:

• Managing the conduct of multiple class actions using case plans, and effectively delegating and coaching junior team members.
• Providing strategic advice and updates to Shine’s partnered litigation funders on budgeting of individual and portfolio matters.
• Developing and maintaining strong relationships with our clients, providing regular and effective communication whilst managing expectations.
• Contributing to the origination and development of new class action opportunities, both domestic and international.

While this is a full-time opportunity, we are open to offering flexible work arrangement options, including work from home options once established, and part-time with a minimum of four (4) days per week for the right candidate.

What you’ll bring

• Significant experience as a solicitor practising across complex civil litigation.
• Current New Zealand practising certificate, or the ability to obtain one.
• Desire to lead high performing legal teams.
• Strong legal analytical skills, research skills, and attention to detail.
• Ability to work with and manage large volumes of complex documents and reports.
