Software Engineer

3.3 Vital – Auckland today
  • Job
Vital is a software startup working on improving the Emergency Room (ER) experience for patients and providers. Our mission is to improve wait times for patients, ideally to cut them in half, and provide additional visibility through the process. We’re starting with the ER experience, and will gradually expand to other areas of the hospital experience into the future. A large part of our platform consists of predictive analysis using Machine Learning, and this is an area we’re devoting increased effort.

We’re a funded, early-stage startup, co-founded by Aaron Patzer (Founder of Mint.com), and Dr. Justin Schrager of Emory University. We have seven talented people based in Auckland, and we’re growing the team again! Over the next year, we’re looking to expand both our product and engineering teams to keep up with growth.

What are we looking for?

We are on the lookout for a software engineer to join our team. Features are built on a modern, standards based stack, consisting of single-page applications (React/Redux), communicating using GraphQL APIs to Scala & Java services, backed by SQL and Graph database systems, all deployed through CI/CD using Docker to our Kubernetes stack running on AWS. Ideally we’re looking for candidates who have experience with some of these technologies, but we’re also happy to teach good coders how to use our stack.

In terms of process, it’s fairly self-driven, with Agile principles being used as needed. We use Kanban for feature tracking, and run with short, iterative sprints. Changes are deployed continuously to production, and we use retrospectives to continuously improve how we work.

Requirements
  • Ideally, you’ve got experience with Scala and/or Java.
  • Experience with JavaScript is a bonus.
  • You have a good understanding of common Computer Science principles.
  • You’re able to analyse and work with algorithms. Big O notation is familiar territory for you, and you’re all about creating generic, scalable solutions.
  • You feel comfortable taking the lead on a project. This includes collaborating with our Product team and fellow engineers to find an appropriate solution to a given problem and break it down into actionable tasks.
  • You understand the importance of defining, documenting and evolving best practices for development in the team.
  • You’re able to work well with other, high-calibre team members. We foster a collaborative environment, where ideas are open to input and feedback from anyone, and we treat each other with respect.
Benefits
  • Flexible working, with core office hours between 10am and 3pm, and remote working available
  • Great office with comfortable amenities (standing desks, coffee, healthy snacks, showers), as well as pet friendly
  • Plenty of opportunity for growth within the company as we scale
  • Professional development! Continue learning, keep growing, attend conferences to foster your knowledge.
