      Pros

Access to cutting edge technology and resources . There are numerous leading experts across many different fields. For biomedical research, affiliation with the hospital lowers the barrier to study human tissues. Through the PIBS program you are guaranteed funding for your first year. Once you join a lab, the PI becomes responsible for you. As part of your training you will almost certainly be pushed and encouraged to apply for grants, fellowships, and other independent funding. Really excellent health insurance options - you can add a significant other and other dependents to be covered as well.

      Cons

Laboratory research space is spread out across many corners of campus, departments can feel siloed or even split up due to being the medical school campus or at the NCRC. The university treats grad students like students or like employees whenever it is convenient for them. The channels for reporting work place harassment or mistreatment by your PI/advisor are vaguely defined and enforced and often operate at the expense of student safety and to protect a faculty member.
