      Pros

UNC Charlotte is a great place to work when you are trying to advance your career because they choose to hire from within; they will never bring someone in from the outside without looking to their current talent first. I can honestly say that the upper administration are highly qualified and have exciting and innovative ideas as to how they want to structure the university - be sure to network and learn from those around you.

      Cons

Things can be very political when it comes to advancement; although they do hire from within, the person promoted may not be the most qualified. It really does pay to know people in upper administration. Also, UNC Charlotte doesn't get enough recognition because it is overshadowed by top tier schools in NC. Funding can be low because the NC government feels that the university can receive endowment funds from the community because UNC Charlotte is based in Charlotte; this lack of funding can be reflected in the mediocre pay.

      Great place to work!

      Pros

Relaxed work environment, but very mission driven. This is a great place to work with passionate and ambitious students, and the ethos of the Y is always to push the boundaries and do better while remaining grounded in the mission.

      Cons

There are only a few staff members, and although there is a lot of flexibility and ownership given to staff members, there are limitations because of the size of the organization. Really no cons though!

      No place like it!

      Pros

I truly enjoy being a part of such a great place. Not only is the history amazing but the diversity and fairness that flows through the university excites me!

      Cons

Pay amount could be slightly higher for housekeepers if you take into consideration that the business can't function properly if it's not thoroughly sanitized on a daily basis. We are the foundation.

Great Environment, Research Dollars Getting Tighter

      Pros

The chemistry department is full of really intelligent, hard working, great people. The research being done is excellent. The Chapel Hill/Carrboro/Durham/Raleigh area is a great place to spend time.

      Cons

The department doesn't devote a lot of resources to professional development, it's pretty much completely up to your advisor. I suppose this is the same system that's in place at most universities, but it can still be frustrating to balance getting your work done with figuring out what's next (given the temporary nature of a postdoc position).

      Pros

The work environment is intellectually stimulating. The facilities are excellent, especially Caudill Labs. The surrounding area (Research Triangle) is a great place to live.

      Cons

Work long hours that are more for the purpose of getting a degree than making money. This can be a con depending on your goals.
