Toxic Leadership Overshadows Talented Team

Pros

The one redeeming quality of Recess Studios is the talented and amazing people who work there. My colleagues were incredibly skilled and passionate, consistently delivering high-quality work despite the oppressive environment. Their camaraderie and support provided some solace in an otherwise dismal workplace.

Cons

From the outset, it was evident that the work environment at Recess Studios is overwhelmingly toxic. The leadership style is alarmingly demeaning and condescending. Constructive feedback is virtually non-existent, replaced instead by belittling comments that do nothing to encourage growth or improve performance. The negative atmosphere is palpable, fostering an environment where employees feel undervalued and constantly on edge. Micromanagement is rampant, with even the most trivial tasks subject to intense scrutiny. This not only stifles creativity and autonomy but also creates a pervasive sense of distrust. Employees are not given the space to excel or develop their skills, leading to frustration and a high turnover rate. The overall culture at Recess Studios is one of negativity and blame. This approach not only demoralizes the team but also hampers productivity and innovation. The toxic culture, combined with demeaning leadership and excessive micromanagement, makes it extremely difficult to succeed or find any job satisfaction. I would strongly advise potential candidates to consider other opportunities where their skills and efforts will be genuinely appreciated.

Most Toxic Work Environment I've Ever Experienced

Pros

- Fun clients with cool projects - Amazing Designers and Post team - Pay is competitive

Cons

- Too many juniors in senior roles with no idea how to manage - No clear processes for anything - Extremely condescending leadership coming from the Founders, who as Gen Z leaders disappoint me more. I thought our generation was going to do this differently but they are worse than some of the average middle aged leaders I've seen elsewhere. - No space for improvement feedback; it's their way or no way at all, even if that means constantly making the same mistakes - No work-life balance; calls are scheduled at 9pm at the very last minute and that is considered normal. Weekend work is guaranteed. - Mid benefits - Return to office but no office perks

Pros

Shiny logo clients for your portfolio

Cons

Company owners try to skate through on clout but in reality theres not much substance at the start up Recess. Theres a big confusion if Recess wants to be a production company or a full service ad agency -- both ends it handles with a lack of maturity. Theres a lack of leadership on the creative side, siloed behavior and a lack of diversity not just in people but thought. Across the agency is hive mind behavior where bad habits are created and rewarded.
