AVOID AT ALL COSTS - McCann Birmingham

Pros

Good holidays. free car parking.

Cons

McCann pride themselves on being 'the most creative agency in the world', this is so far from the truth it's laughable. If you want to work with e-cigarette and cigarette brands this is the place for you, if not avoid, as this is primarily what you will be working on (although they don't want people to know this). The managers are bullies who like to belittle people who they think are beneath them, some of whom would have been fired by any decent company for some of their actions, yet McCann is very good at brushing things under the carpet. The culture has a long long way to go its still an old boys club. I urge you to avoid at all costs.

Terrible place to work

Pros

Some really great people there and some fun to be had.

Cons

The whole company is overworked (even to ad-industry standards) to the point of breakdown/exhaustion. Some of the big accounts like Just Eat, Xbox, Dettol, saw multiple people signed off or resign with stress across all disciplines (PM, strategy, account management). There's no support for the mid-level staff who are doing the actual work and you're expected to just put up with the an insane workload until breaking point. Some truly awful people in senior positions particularly within strategy - I saw frequent bullying behaviour which is ignored by senior management in spite of multiple claims against said person.

Pros

The name of working at McCann is recognizable but it doesn’t make up for the blatant disregard for diversity, bullying, discriminatory behavior that is ok’d from the top down.

Cons

It’s an agency that will just make you not enjoy advertising even after decades in the industry. Crazy. But true. Women crying in bathrooms. People fired for standing up for themselves. People pushed out for having disabilities. These are just some of the things everyone in management in the New York office is well aware of and does nothing to address. Unfortunately there is a large bullying problem within senior management. Not just in terms of race but gender and as I personally experienced as a women with a disability. Be warned. They talk a good talk (typically in town-hall like speeches) but as you can see by numerous reviews…they do NOT walk the walk. This is a toxic culture of females bullying other females. It’s just not worth the mental abuse you will endure.
