Pros

Good people, who are fun and thoughtful to work with. Working for a newspaper company is unique because you are like no other industry in the world. Centralized location for Orange County residents. Nice facilities.

Cons

Constant downsizing. Newpapers are not in a healthy place, thus money is VERY tight, and there are little to no perks to working. Wage and hiring freezes are a constant, and are now expected. Cuts to everything is also constant and expected.

Used to be a good family-owned company. Now they are a mess

Pros

This was a good company to work for. Not so much anymore.

Cons

New owners had no experience in the industry, ignored the Internet, and launched two newspapers and bought another in the LA area. Almost everything they have done has been a disaster. Rumored to not be paying outside vendors on time (or at all). Asking employees to deliver newspapers.

New owner doesn't know what he's doing

Pros

Nice people. Reporters who care.

Cons

It's painfully obvious that management has no idea what they are doing. They micromanage and that means no real planning or structure. They don't know anything about news, much less about digital. They're literally the only two people left on the planet who think print will save the news industry. They fired half the company including some of the best journalist we had. Now they're expanding by starting new papers but they aren't hiring anyone. The LA Register will be written by a handful of out of college reporters. Yet, they keep talking about quality and journalistic integrity. They treat the remaining staff like faceless, replaceable bodies. I have never worked anywhere so dysfunctional and depressing.
