Pros

Worked with tech companies facing significant challenges, enhancing CV credentials. Opportunities for juniors to contribute in meetings, boosting our confidence and professional growth. In terms of work-life balance, Outcast generally respected boundaries, with weekends and after 6pm left free most times.

Cons

The UK business has struggled to win new business since a key MD left last year, and the current leadership hasn't leveraged their networks effectively. Bias towards beauty, climate, and software sectors limited client variety. Inadequate vetting led to difficult relationships with non-tech-native and niche clients (and the media we had to reach out to on their behalf). Simple tasks undergo multiple levels of review, reflecting a lack of trust and excessive control among the management team. The split between business development and client advisory may not suit those wanting to grow as comms professionals. The focus shifts more to business growth than skill enhancement as you progress. Management avoids tough client conversations, resulting in uninspiring tasks and missed strategic opportunities. There is a lack of clarity on role development and limited support for those joining outside of the typical entry-level programme. There were concerns about the capability of some senior staff (one Associate Director in particular), impacting team dynamics and client relationships. Limited collaboration on global mandates with the US team - came across as a lack of ambition to pursue larger opportunities.

Pros

- Exposure to big-name clients and industry giants. Many employees take in-house roles at well-known tech companies after working here.

Cons

- Toxic, cliquey workplace culture. Those that have been at Outcast long are shown a lot of favoritism. - No work-life balance. Expect extremely long hours. You will need to justify signing off or stepping away from your desk if you have any kind of life outside of work. You will be expected to sign on early in the morning or late at night for needier clients who have immediate access to you via Slack. Expect to work even if you’re on PTO. - Employees are encouraged to “snitch” on one another. - Accounts are improperly staffed and expectations are not clearly laid out. - Managers offer conflicting advice and speak poorly of one another. - Members of the leadership team that are notoriously hot-headed and hard to please are both feared and rewarded.
