I worked at Debenhams part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Usually fast paced and kept busy. Pay isn’t the worst. Most of the sales staff are brilliant, working in a department store really feels like a community. Good opportunity to improve customer service. You will learn a lot of skills. Training is thorough and effective. Staff discount is quite good if you qualify for the debenhams colleague card, especially in the restaurant.

    Cons

Impossible to get holidays unless you book at least a year in advance. All management care about is opening debenhams cards, you are invisible if not. Hard work goes unoticed by management; only opening store cards. Poor work life balance. If you’re full time, your shifts are totally inconsistent. If you’re part time, you’ll work all weekend, good if you’re at uni and want to work as much work as you can get; bad...

    Advice to Management

Notice the hard work that your staff do. The debenhams card obviously has its benefits financially to the business, but a lot more work goes into the running of the store than just opening those cards. But most of that work goes unoticed from senior management and there is a lack of incentive to do it now.

I have been working at Debenhams full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Staff discount, sales staff you work with.

    Cons

Hardly any staff on the sales floor. Treated poorly by management. Constantly working way out of job description, with little to no thanks.

    Advice to Management

Treat staff as human beings and not slaves. Praise where praise is due and don't gossip about other colleagues in front of others.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Debenhams part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Quick interview process Other retail assistants were friendly and helpful, upper management was not

    Cons

Scheduled shifts during times I had previously said I wasn't available Difficult to change shifts and supervisors seemed annoyed when asked Was not till trained even though I worked at least 16 hours a week Never gave me staff discount even though I asked multiple times Took far too long to arrange a uniform

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees about their availability to avoid having to change shifts in the future. Till train staff as during the busy Christmas period there weren't enough till staff available.

I have been working at Debenhams full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good breaks Fantastic Team Easy job Good staff discount

    Cons

Cliquey management Too much focus on selling Credit Cards with too little focus on customers Zero job progression Very poor training - left to own devices and very little support from management.

    Advice to Management

Spend time training your staff properly and listen to the troops on the ground. They are the ones who have to deal with customers day in/day out.

I worked at Debenhams part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Staff discount (20-25%), and good colleagues

    Cons

Stock - This company has had the same boring brands for years, sales advisors want to be passionate about the stock. Management - treat staff like absolute rubbish and look down on supervisors and anyone below. They do not listen to the staff of departments, instead the managers literally strut around the store and click their fingers to make sure tasks are done on the spot. There’s hardly any diversity in management,...

    Advice to Management

Stop looking down on sales advisors when they are the intergral reason why the company is still standing. If you’re going to force sales advisors to open store CREDIT cards, realise that we’re providing a banking service as well, start giving out commission for it and you’ll see a better result rather than pushing and forcing us to get accounts just so you all can get your bonuses. Get off your high horse, the company...
