If you perform you will get noticed and rewarded.

      Cons

Business units vary greatly from one to the next so important to make sure that you are happy with the Business Unit you are applying to.

Great place to start your career but difficult to progress beyond your initial role.

      Pros

Variety of projects and clients. More benefits than similar companies. Great place to start a career in IT.

      Cons

Lack of career path. Supporting services such as HR, Marketing, Payroll and Finance not at the level they should be in relation to the size of the company. Very different structure and operational model between business units.

      Good Company

      Pros

New and better office with comfortable work space (if you end up working in Datacom) Very happy to have worked on some of the challenging projects. Very less period on the bench (time when there is no project). The managers are always on the hunt to place you in a project. Helpful teammates Positive environment to work Employee benefits - Medical (Southern Cross Regular Care) insurance, life and income protection insurance.

      Cons

Long term on-site client project will make you feel detached from Datacom. Very few managers make an effort to change that feeling. There is no consistency between teams/Business units (BU). Each BU does things their own way in handling the team members, projects etc. The experience may vary very differently based on where you end up. Team restructure sometimes happen in silence without any communication to employees

      Pros

Lots of amazing people to learn from and enjoy work with, plenty of teams to jump to when things become less challenging, not overly difficult to transfer internally, good variety in projects, great location

      Cons

Baseline pay tends towards the lower end, lack of collaboration across business units

      Pros

Great Opportunities to express and innovate, Improved remuneration in recent years, Few geeks to work with. One of the best companies to start your career as an IT grad in NZ for software development.

      Cons

No work life balance, Really poor senior/middle management, Consultancy is not in Datacom's DNA so avoid if you are into IT advisory or Consultancy. Overall poor processes. Good at sales but rubbish when it comes to delivery. Politics between different Business units and no collaboration to deliver customer success.

Great place to work if you're male and you never question things

      Pros

Great people at a 'worker bee' level (middle managers and up - not so much) Staff are well looked after from a benefits perspective - health, life, income protection insurance

      Cons

Business unit model focuses managers on profit, not people (as much as they pretend they're all about their staff) Questioning the status quo and trying new ways of doings things is not acceptable in most business units - again, as much as they pretend it is Old school, hierarchical, sexist - women get paid significantly less than their male peers (for the same job)

      Good and bad

      Pros

Depending on where you manage to find yourself in the organisation you get a lot of autonomy. Depending on the opportunities that come to Datacom you will get opportunities to extend yourself. I believe I am richer for the experience and gained much from Datacom. People on the ground are usually committed and excellent! They work hard, most I know too hard, its often their commitment that gets things done.

      Cons

The autonomy often meant no support, kind of sink or swim environment. Only time training was given was when a client did it. Environment is dependent on local management. Local management at time of departure had skills in building the business, but tended to lack in the staff management side. The approach of independent business units / profit centres doesn't work as its like having competing groups both inside and outside the organisation. Results in things like combined bids for work being one and sucked up by the bigger profit centre cutting out the other - usually the regions. This may have changed now.
