I worked at VMware full-time (More than 8 years)
VMware is a big company but in many ways had a startup vibe. That was great because the resources and infrastructure of a big company were there, but it gave most people I worked with freedom to work on many projects, influence, move around, and contribute in many ways. Plus, many things moved faster than they might at other companies of the same size. Perks were really great including bonuses, events on the campus, opportunities, etc.
The biggest con is the annual layoff. During most of the years I was there, we were growing like crazy, beating expectations, gaining in stock price, etc. It was always positive and upward. However, every single January, it was known that there would be a round of layoffs, even when all numbers were looking great as they almost always were. Management called it restructuring. But, over the years, some really good people were let go for no apparent reason. Then to add insult to injury, a week or two later, there would be a company quarterly meeting discussing how VMware was doing so well and is still hiring, but they had to make some changes. It always felt dishonest and the sympathy for those let go came across as disingenuous.
Advice to Management
January was always a nerve racking month and it completely destroyed any sense of loyalty to the company. I know a few people that completely changed their perception of VMware after a colleague of theirs was let go with no apparent rhyme or reason. Many people left shortly after as a result of losing loyalty to the company or for just being stressed out about themselves getting cut the next year.
The process took 2+ months. I interviewed at VMware in August 2015.
The hiring process at VMware was very long and drawn out, spanning several months from when they first contacted me. There was an informal interview with the recruiter, telephone technical screen and finally a face to face interview.
The technical screen was as you would expect, lots of technical questions which you should know a fair amount of going for this type of role so was par for the course.
The face to face interview was pretty straight forward. There were no 'trick' questions (apart from one which had absolutely no relevance to the role - "Explain how to convert an IP address to binary) and my interviewers were very easy to get on with. I was also asked to pre-prepare a 15 minute presentation on a subject of their choice which also seemed to go well and I was complimented on.
The thing that really irritated me however was despite everything going well, I was not offered the position due to 'lack of experience in large projects'. While my experience seemed to match the size of projects mentioned in the face to face interview, my experience is laid out in some detail on my CV and also from the technical screen where several times drilled into in detail, so if it was not of the size they were looking for then they had all this information up front.
This meant that I was invited for a face to face interview which I actually had no chance of actually succeeding at, as I failed it based on information they had up front, and nothing I could do during this face to face interview would make a difference. It felt like I was simply invited to 'make up the numbers' for interviews for this position. Upon reflection this seems more than likely as there was also a distinct lack of normal questions like what your availability is, which is usual when they are seriously interviewing you. They also only asked if I had any questions whilst they were already leaving the room and rushing me out the door.
Despite this, VMware is a great company and it is still my goal to one day work for them. I am glad I have at least interviewed there and found the process valuable, I will be back and try and land a similar job again some time in the future.
