J&C Starfish Ltd is seeking a skilled Building Associate to join our facilities team. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in carpentry and general building maintenance. This role involves assisting with construction, repairs, and upkeep of our facilities to ensure a safe and functional environment.

Job type: Full-time Permanent

Number of positions for this job: up to 2

Pay rate: from $30-$40 per hour

Days required: 5-6 days/week

Hours per week: min 30, max 60 hours per week

Responsibilities and Account abilities:

Perform carpentry tasks, including measuring, cutting, assembling, and installing wooden structures.
Assist in planning construction schedules, workflow sequencing, and labour allocation for carpentry projects.
Interpret architectural drawings, framing layouts, specifications, and construction plans.
Monitor carpentry works including wall framing, roofing structures, flooring systems, cladding, cabinetry installation, formwork, and finishing works.
Ensure construction activities comply with New Zealand Building Code, project specifications, and workplace health and safety requirements.
Inspect completed carpentry work to ensure quality workmanship and compliance standards are achieved.
Coordinate subcontractors, carpenters, apprentices, suppliers, and delivery schedules.
Assist with estimating materials, labour requirements, and project timelines.
Maintain site documentation including daily progress reports, safety records, material usage, and inspection reports.
Identify construction issues or delays and communicate solutions to Site Managers and project stakeholders.
Ensure efficient use of tools, machinery, equipment, and construction materials.
Conduct regular site safety checks and ensure workers follow safe operating procedures.
Liaise with clients, architects, engineers, building inspectors, and suppliers regarding project progress and technical matters.
Support procurement and inventory control of timber, hardware, and building materials.
Assist in project handover inspections and defect rectification processes.

Job Requirement

NZQF Diploma or equivalent qualification in Building, Carpentry, Construction Management, or related field; OR minimum 3 years relevant construction industry experience.

Proven experience in carpentry, including framing, finishing.

Familiarity with common hand and power tools used in construction and maintenance.

Strong understanding of residential and commercial carpentry construction methods.

Ability to read and interpret technical construction drawings and specifications.

Experience coordinating carpentry teams and construction site activities.

Knowledge of New Zealand building regulations and health & safety requirements.

Good communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.

Self-motivated

Clean non-criminal record
