      Teacher Interview

      2 Oct 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Vancouver, WA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at VIPKid (Vancouver, WA) in Apr 2017

      Interview

The interview is truly a joke. First they have you do a mock class- they give you the information and all is well, you practice, you read through all the instructions (like 4 hours worth of information between the videos and the docs), you have to take a quiz. Then you do the mock class- you do well, you get feedback and they invite you to a second mock class. Now the feedback you get from your first instructor is in an email, plus what they said to you during the mock class, and you read through it and prep for the second mock class. Then you do the exact same thing with the mock class 2: you prepare, you practice, you read through everything, you incorporate the first instructor's feedback into your teaching style so that you don't have the same issues come up later. Then you do the mock class- I was given the 25 minute beginner class to teach- now in the first mock class I got feedback that I "wasn't confident on the phonics of L" -this is not true and I teach currently so I know my phonics are confident and correct. I did the second mock class and it's like these instructors HAVE NO CLUE WHO YOU ARE OR WHAT YOU'VE DONE SO FAR IN THE PROCESS. Are they truly just told to "Show up at this time and instruct" without being told anything about the person they are evaluating? She had no clue that this was my mock 2; plus she wasn't even given the feedback forms from the first mock class to see what the first instructor thought I had done well/poorly on- how is that possible? How is someone who is evaluating a person not given ANY TYPE OF INFORMATION from that person's file? I've done evaluating of students in classes and out in real time experiences on the job and always had all the previous documentation regarding this evaluatee at hand to read before I evaluated them. Secondly, she had serious connection issues-she disappeared for approx 1-2 minutes halfway through my first 15 minutes of teaching; she froze occasionally on screen BUT NOT ONE OF THESE ISSUES WAS MENTIONED IN MY EVALUATION BY HER-NO APOLOGIES, NO COMMENT "DUE TO MY TECH ISSUES THE TEACHER MISSED TWO MINUTES OF TIME" etc etc NOTHING SAID ABOUT HER ISSUES AT ALL. Thirdly, her feedback from what she said to me and what was written differed-on the written feedback she said I skipped slides- I didn't skip slides EVER. She also said I didn't give enough time for student feedback which wasn't true either because TO MY FACE SHE SAID I HAD DONE A GREAT JOB ALLOWING HER TIME TO REPLY! All in all VIPKid has an interview process that is completely over the top, disjointed, the evaluators have nothing monitoring them and what they tell you and then what they write up about your mock class, basically it's trying to be something it isn't. Plus this was my second time interviewing with them- the exact same thing happened the first time. I did very well on the first mock class and got rave reviews from the evaluator, then did the second mock class and had a completely 180 degree different experience. The second mock class evaluator was late, made the comment "I am really busy today so let's get this done please," and did the exact same thing- told me I had done well and she really liked certain things, but then wrote up those exact things she'd praised me for as bad/ineffectual. I didn't get an offer the first time either, then three months pass and I get an email inviting me to interview again. I thought to myself, "do you really want to go through this again?" But so many people rave about this company that I thought "you just had a random bad experience but that won't happen this time-look at how many people love it!" How wrong I was! I had the exact same experience and was denied an offer AGAIN. This company needs to set up and create a much better hiring process- use the same evaluators for both mock 1 and 2 classes, don't use evaluators who are only doing it for the extra hours and money. I have a very bad taste in my mouth from this company now and will share my experiences far and wide so that others know what they might experience.

There weren't any questions- it was an online teaching mock class.

We are sorry to hear that your second Mock Class lacked an adequate level of background information, and an inconsistency in feedback. VIPKID is always looking to provide supplemental training for our interviewers – in order to avoid any negative experiences. We are working hard to streamline this process, and would definitely like to hear back from you directly. Below is the link to a survey that can help us collect more information about your Mock Class. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeS2GhDwhPN1GzscH_ciaeyWVNIayAd-e98UjyylhOViOlyFw/viewform By providing us with additional feedback, we will be able to find ways to make more improvements. We appreciate your time and understanding.

just a quick demo lesson following the course materials, then a few logistical questions and talk about the program. Was quite quick and easy overall if you have teaching experience..

Pretty simple! There was a live and recorded portion where you "teach" a sample class. My interviewer was nice and helpful. Make sure your internet is good and use a wired connection

      Interview

Easy and straight forward interview process. There is a demo teaching section. This was a while ago so it may have changed. The onboarding process was also easy. Again, this was a while ago, so it may have changed.
