      Teacher Interview

      7 Feb 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Beijing, Beijing
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at VIPKid (Beijing, Beijing) in Jan 2017

      Interview

The online application was straightforward and immediately prompted me to schedule an interview once I submitted it. I received an email with videos and other materials to prepare me for teaching a 10 minute Demo Class, presented by me to the interviewer acting like a 5-year old. The total interview is supposed to last 25-minutes The training materials have a certain charm despite their discrepancies, which I just chalked that up to a language barrier. I sign in to their virtual classroom, where the interview is being held with someone in Beijing, early. My equipment works. My headset is good to go. My reward system is ready. The interviewer shows up almost exactly on time. Asks if I can hear him, see him. Everything looks good. Then he jumps straight into the questions below. I felt like I was taking a survey, or fielding a sales call about my cable provider. I was called only "Teacher," and he did not offer his name. It looked like he was sitting in a call center, and his dismissive manner and desire for one word answers was unexpected, but I rolled with it as best I could. The "Introduction and Interview" portion lasted just about 30 seconds total. I kid you not. I have never felt demeaned quite like this before. This was not at all what I was expecting after reading the other Glassdoor reviews of VIPKID. I feel like I did well during the demo. Sure it wasn't perfect, but I hadn't been trained yet, besides a few 10 minute videos they sent me to watch, and multiple videos I found online. The entire interview lasted much, much less than the 25 minutes indicated earlier. I was not offered a chance at the end to ask questions. There are some unflattering things said about VIPKID on other review websites--but before my interview I dismissed them, mostly because of the company's high rating here. I thought it must just be people who are angry they didn't get hired. But do your research on this one, folks. VIPKID looks amazing on the surface, but look into their reputation among people in their own country, the short time that so many of their teachers teach before transferring and becoming recruiters, the pay cuts if your hours don't reach 45 classes per month, 30 classes per month (which you do not have much control over), the lack of a base pay. Ask them questions. I wouldn't be surprised if this review is taken down, honestly. Do your research.

Pretty simple! There was a live and recorded portion where you "teach" a sample class. My interviewer was nice and helpful. Make sure your internet is good and use a wired connection

Easy and straight forward interview process. There is a demo teaching section. This was a while ago so it may have changed. The onboarding process was also easy. Again, this was a while ago, so it may have changed.
