      Interview

In order to fulfill their unethical "top 3%" acceptance quota, they will ask a list of rules for you to prepare for your second interview. Upon making your presentation, they will reject you during the live recording (so awkward!!), motivating that you did not fulfill some additional new secret rules to complete the interview. This is a logical fallacy called "moving the goal posts" which is an abuse tactic. Please don't feel like you're a failure if this happens to you, it's not your fault and you're most probably a great employee. This is just a way for them to fill in their exclusivity quota that they brag about on their website. This way they steer employees with self-respect and logical awareness away. Not to mention how weird it is that you probably have an employee who inspects thousands of recordings of people reacting to rejections to fulfill this sick quota thing. Yikes!

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Present us a list of six projects from your portfolio with pictures, a description that is not too long, but must explain all the details of the individual projects, plus a list of motivations about all of your decisions made on those six projects, all within 2 pages or less.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Toptal in Nov 2015

      Interview

First step: Interview in English, this is to check if you are fluent, very easy conversation, talk about yourself, experience, skills, etc. Next step, some Toptal designers review your portfolio, be sure to send you best projects. If they like what they see, you will pass to a final interview with another Toptal designer, this is a shared-screen Skype call where you have to explain your creative process (remember: try to explain each step with detail), you will present a project you have done, expect questions like "Why you did that?" "Why you choose that typo?" "Why do you think this is a solution for this client?" etc. After that, the interviewer send you a very awful designed page and you have to tell what you will do to make it better. Unfortunately I didn't passed this final step, because I didn't explained my creative process with details and I got nervous, but definitely I will try again in a few months. At the end, you receive feedback to make it better in future interviews.

      Interview

Had to do the design exercise twice, both times the brief said it's "open to interpretation". Turns out it wasn't open to my interpretation but to theirs. Both times the screeners were fishing for reasons to reject the project. Very subjective. Very questionable.

      Interview

Basically the interview is split into 5 rounds. The first one is just to check your communication skills. I had the interview and the interviewer was so nice, it went all fine. Next was to send a portfolio with best 5 projects. I did that and they asked me if I want to continue to the next step which was a screen sharing interview to showcase my workflow. This is the painpoint: Their interviewers "designers" seem to not know the difference between a polished product and unfinished product. I showed both polished interefaces, and unfinished ones. The reason I was rejected is that the interviewer didn't like how I presented my work, and cit ' I want to see your workflow and not just the finished product' . And I just did that, but then later on he told me to show a completed project. The reason I got rejected was that I had : Corners of the rectangles are not the same. You interrupt me, and do not ask me questions. ( Am I the interviewer or you are, and when I am asked to showcase my workflow, YOU SHOULD LISTEN not me. ) That was the horrible experience ever. I worked for huge Swiss agencies and never had these problems when pitching. The thing I will just try again, just for curiosity, because we all understand that 3% marketing campaign. And I analyzed their TOP designers work, and to be honest it was nowhere near to be impressive.

Please show me the workflow, after I did, oh please don't show me the unfinished product!
