      Software Developer Interview

      4 Jun 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Vancouver, BC
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at PayByPhone (Vancouver, BC)

      Interview

Applied online and within couple of days received an invitation to phone interview. Questions were taken from a script very traditional HR questions. When I asked for elaboration, the respond was that its is a generic question and was not provided guidance as to what the interviewer meant. In addition, it was asked to do a "home assignment". I responded that far too many recruiters ask for free labour be donated to their companies as an attempt to evaluate a candidate. They did not like what I said and I realized that was an indication as to how flexible, and understanding they might be with their very own engineers when it comes to demanding tasks. To me if a company is not open to talk and listen or open to conduct a conversation that is a red flag about their culture. This seemed pretty similar interview to me. It was a do or die culture. In addition asked about how many people have left the company and why, and the respond was pretty fake and unconvincing. But apparently the average seniority is about 2 years per recruited respond. Asked about stack of technology and the expectation, respond was minimal very unclear about what was expected from me. Overall, seemed like a startup culture. There seems to be a sudden urge to hire lot of people to manage the new contracts with municipalities but little thought into how to utilize these many people when contract is delivered or how to keep the people in company for a long term. I suggest if you need a job, take it, otherwise, do yourself a favour and save yourself time and effort.

While we are disappointed to hear that you did not enjoy the recruitment process, we are happy to hear the suggestions you put forward for improvements. At PayByPhone, we are focusing on hiring the right people and ensuring our employees are equipped with the right resources needed to be successful. Part of this process involves asking our candidates standard questions that allow us to gain a better understanding of cultural fit and alignment of goals and values. We ask our candidates to complete some form of assessment because this allows us to get a better understanding of how they would perform in similar working situations. This process allows us to be efficient in our hiring process and also guides our hiring efforts. Further, our hiring process is structured so that our candidates get the opportunity to meet different members of the team at each stage and ask questions they may have regarding PayByPhone.
