      Software Development Engineer Interview

      21 Jul 2015
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Costa Mesa, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through university. The process took 8 weeks. I interviewed at MeridianLink (Costa Mesa, CA) in Mar 2015

      Interview

I submitted my application through a university website. I was sent an email with a technical question to solve. After completing the problem, I was contacted again to schedule a phone interview, and the interview was expected to last about an hour. However, I never reached the full hour because of the difficulty of the interview questions. The interviewer started by saying he would ask questions about my undergraduate coursework, but he decided to choose the courses that didn't even apply to the position. He asked about electromagnetism, linear algebra, and quantum physics, and afterwards he began asking more questions in the field of computer science such as how memory is handled in Java. I could already tell that the interviewer was just reading information and questions from a sheet of paper so it wasn't a very engaging interview.

Thank you for taking the time to share your interview experience. We are especially interested in talented computer science majors for our software development engineer position, but leave the door open for other technical majors as well. We realize there are graduates who have a strong aptitude for logical thinking and enjoy coding, but who might have chosen a different major. College is the main "career" for most graduates, so we ask questions about different classes for different reasons. We're sorry your experience wasn't more positive, and wish you success in your career.

      Application

I applied through university. The process took 4 months. I interviewed at MeridianLink in Feb 2017

      Interview

I applied through my school's career fair and they emailed me when their screening period opened asking for a response asking me about a time I worked on an interesting project. I was then scheduled for an hour long phone interview. Most of the questions were on Java basics, data structures and various sorting methods, and other questions relating to the courses I had taken. Definitely should have reviewed material I had learned in those classes, but the questions could have been answered with a google search. Because of this, we ended the interview early by 20 minutes. Also had a few behavioral questions regarding the mentioned project and my grades in the classes I took. The interviewer was nice and allowed me to ask him questions regarding the company.
