I applied on a Sunday and received a call the next day from someone in HR. She asked me some questions about my background, told me she'd forward my information to the head of the department, and that I'd hear something shortly. The next day I got a call to set up a second phone interview with the actual head of the department the following day. We talked for over a half an hour about my background, my interest in the company and what not. Maybe a day or two later I got a call to set up an in-person interview at their office the following week.
I may have talked less in my interview with the VP of Compliance than any other interview I've ever had. He talked to me about the scope of the department, the types of issues they run into on a daily business, showed me their software, gave me a tour of the office, introduced me to a couple of the senior level VPs. He seriously covered every aspect of the position and what his department does. It felt more like a lecture or orientation than an interview to be quite honest.
I waited maybe ten days after the interview until I started inquiring about the job status. They did get back to me and although I didn't get the job, this was easily the most painless interview process I've experienced.
