      Data Partner Interview

      6 Jan 2013
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Westport, CT
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Bridgewater Associates (Westport, CT) in Oct 2012

      Interview

Had two phone interviews, a written assignment and 4 personality tests, and then a final day which consisted of a group interview, a 2 on 1 interview, and another phase which I did not advance to. People on the phone were very frank and direct, which should be expected from Bridgewater employees, but definitely helpful and friendly. Discussions were not necessarily challenging, but very detailed. Interview scheduling and the process between interviews was very unprofessional. Interviews were cancelled, delayed, and rescheduled without any timely communication. Phone calls and emails to HR went unreturned. Not a dealbreaker, but extremely inconsiderate. On site, during the morning group interview, one of the interviewers was indirect in his questioning and unresponsive to disagreement with his opinion or questioning. To some extent, he embodied the antithesis of the ideal Bridgewater employee one reads about. Afternoon interviewers were more like my phone interviewers: very detailed, very probing, and very direct. Friendly, helpful, and genuinely interested, but no fluff. After my second interview, my interviewers told me I was advancing to the third portion of the interview, but then returned several minutes later to tell me that I would not be on account of my morning interview. Overall, I enjoyed my interactions with the majority of the employees, but I was very unhappy about the experience with one of my interviewers. He was not as open and objective as everyone else I communicated with. I took his questions and comments at face value, but that proved to be fatal. He asked a question in which he wanted a data product designed with an absolutely and non-negotiably necessary component. Upon further clarification, he reiterated that he would not want the product without the component. The solution he provided and was looking for, however, did not include the component. The question was unfair and he was misleading.

      Question 1

None of the questions were very challenging technically or unexpected. That being said, I did not advance to the third round of the day.
