      Elixir Software Engineer Interview

      25 Aug 2023
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Angel

      Interview

The interview process at Angel Studios was a huge letdown. I felt so excited and confident after the first initial interview, and that all changed quickly. The recruiter did not communicate the facts about the second interview very well. I was told the second interview was not a technical interview, but that there still may be a couple of technical questions. I got on the call for the second interview and was greeted by a software engineer, who proceeded to ask me technical questions. This was ok with me, but still a little surprising. I was able to answer everything as expected. The second portion of the interview was a coding challenge. I was asked to solve this challenge in less than 20 mins. The interviewer, who did not communicate very well, cut me off before I finished and stated "Thanks for your time, but we are looking for someone who can hit the ground running right away and I don't believe that you will be a good fit." He then ended the call and that's where my communication with the company stopped. I had no idea what I did wrong, and what I could have done better. I was also told by the recruiter that they were looking for some senior level engineers as well as some mid level engineers. It seemed like the engineer that I interviewed with was not aware of this and I didn't even get the chance to convey that to him because he was in a rush to leave the call. This was a horrible experience as I'm sure most engineers know that leetcode is not a good representation of your knowledge. Also, having a 20 minute time limit (that I didn't actually get all of), is not comparable to how you would handle an urgent task at work. I see this as more of a blessing than a curse because it would have been unfortunate to be hired by this company and then see how things really are after the fact. If the lack of communication between recruiting and engineering is this obvious, I can't imagine what the rest of the company is like. In a way I feel like I dodged a bullet. I'm writing this review in hopes that the next person will communicate with recruiting and the engineers who interview them, so that everyone is aligned and so that the company doesn't miss out on a great candidate. Elixir is a very niche language and the pool of candidates is not that big.
