What is working from home like at National Geographic Society?

Pros

- People I work with are great. - new CEO does seem genuine and working hard to right the ship. - Looks good on a CV.

Cons

- Crappy and stingy benefits. - HR is a mess. (That said, a couple people there do genuinely try to do right.) - Shady board of directors that meddles and micromanages way too much and gives employees zero opportunities to provide input. - All Staff under the senior level are ridiculously overworked and underpaid. - Explorers are basically given free reign and often don’t treat staff with respect. - Staff are constantly “voluntold” to do extra work outside of their job description. - General vibe is that we’re cogs “lucky to work here” and if we don’t like it we can move on. - Unstable office environment. Constant reorgs and leadership changes. - How are we going to be Nat Geo and STILL have a 1960s-esque dress code for the office? - Very arbitrary remote work policy that doesn’t reflect the nuances of WFH or what we’ve all been through during the pandemic. - While my team is great about work life balance, it’s definitely an outlier at the org. - Vacation policy. On paper looks nice, in reality good luck trying to get away from the office for more than a long weekend.

Advice to Management

- Stop outsourcing and relying on contractors for everything. staff appropriately to the organization’s vision. - Be more respectful to ALL staff. - Nat Geo has a $1+ billion endowment. We know you can pay staff more and drastically improve benefits.

Very arbitrary remote work policy that doesn’t reflect the nuances of WFH or what we’ve all been through during the pandemic.

How are promotions handled at National Geographic Society?

Pros

Great people, very mission-driven, the work of high performers is consistently recognized, and there's lots of opportunity to get involved with different projects; it's a good environment for a self-starter who needs variety in their work.

Cons

The office floorplan is quite open, decisionmaking can be a little bureaucratic/political, the acceptability of remote work varies widely by division, and promotions are considered only once per year and are not super common.
